We received an unexpected surprise from Babie Lato (POL) in the final Slovak classic race, the Saint Leger Charvát over 2 800 m. After a battle down the home stretch he beat the winner of the Czech Saint Leger by half a length, setting a new course record in the process. The two horses finished well ahead of the rest of the field.
The injury suffered by Registana (GER) in her last start on 26 August in Pardubice proved to be more serious than first thought and will require a longer period of convalescence. This means that this amazing mare will miss this year's Grand Pardubice; she will end her racing career and enter a well-deserved retirement at the age of ten. Born at the Görlsdorf horse farm in Germany, Registana (GER) (Tauchsport-Reklame) is the sister of the outstanding horse Registano (24-time steeplechase winner in Germany), Rekord (Listed flat race winner in Hannover) and Regalo (6-time steeplechase winner in Germany). During her long career Registana (GER) started 33 steeplechases in Wrbna colours in the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Germany, Italy and Great Britain. She won 21 times and finished in the money another 10 times. She failed to finish only two races – last year’s Grand Pardubice after a fall (she fell only once in her career) and two years ago in Cheltenham due to jockey error. Registana (GER) is the two-time winner of the Grand Pardubice (2003 and 2004), was uncommonly successful abroad, particularly in Merano, Italy, where she won 10 times (with winnings of CZK 10 444 858). After completing her treatment Registana (GER) will be sent to a horse farm abroad, where a suitable mating partner will be sought.
Warm and sunny weather drew over three thousand spectators to the 15th racing day in Světlá Hora, where the programme featured 7 steeplechases, two pony races and the traditional parade of our most successful horses - Registana (GER), Masini (POL) and Kolorado (POL). The top event was the traditional Wrbna Racing Stables Trophy - a cross-country steeplechase over 4 600 m. The Karlovice horse Bargiel took the lead at the start but one kilometre before the finish line Wrbna’s Sun Set (POL) ridden by Jan Faltejsk went ahead. He quickly built a lead and held it till the end in front of a charging Tanečnice. Sixteen finished third in front of Bargiel. The second most important race of the afternoon – the Světlá Hora Trophy – a hurdle race over 3 400 m, was completely dominated by Polish stables, which were invited to our races for the first time and immediately arrived in large numbers. Juno Royal led by amateur Pavel Peprna beat Kalmar and Krogulec. The Polish representatives enjoyed their time here and promised to be back next year in even greater numbers. The first race on the programme – the Sven Car Trophy – was won easily by Lakreg with Bohuslav Mátl aboard; Jack de Traou Land and Joshua finished second and third, respectively. The traditional Alžběta Hradilová Trophy was dominated by Atura with Radek Havelka aboard; Lakosta and Sajmon finished second and third. The Živa Trophy was won by Dyktando with jockey Marek Stromský over Jacuzzi and Wrbna’s Theoden (POL). The EPI Trophy was won with conviction by Kathalpo with jockey Josef Bartoš over the ageless duo of Everton and Folklór. The final race, the Landbau Trophy, was marred by an unpleasant occurrence. The technical personnel began to prematurely remove the hurdle at the finish line; this hurdle is jumped twice during the course of the race. The workers noticed this mistake, but while being moved one part of the hurdle fell due to a construction error and the shortage of time did not permit the hurdle to be restored to its original condition. Because this narrowed hurdle did not fulfil the conditions of the race code (and two horses swerved and lost their riders) the racing commission annulled the race. One of the horses impacted by this error was our Kamienczyk (POL) with jockey Faltejsek. Immediately after the racing day we completely reconstructed our light wooden hurdles to avoid a similar situation in the future. Racehorse owners received their registration and starting fees back and our company compensated riders in a similar manner. The large field spread out during the course of the race and this mitigated problems. Nevertheless, not all of the horses demonstrated a sufficient level of jumping training and this, unfortunately, was the cause of a serious injury to one horse and three falls by riders. Fortunately, they avoided injury. Detailed race results
Sunday’s meeting in Milan proved unlucky for our stables as we tried to defend two victories from last year in Grade 1 races. Last year’s winner of the Grade 1 Gran Steeplechase di Milano Kolorado (POL) fell along with Nero three obstacles before the finish line while jumping over a loose bar. Though it was possible to remount Kolorado (POL), last year’s champion finished fifth. His stable mate Sun Set (POL) finished fourth behind another Czech horse, Pesso. Things turned out even worse in the second Grade 1 race of the day – the Gran Corsa Siepi di Milano. Last year’s defending champion Duce (POL) fell along with Lark (CZE) and did not finish the race. Unfortunately Lark (CZE), the second best hurdler after Duce (POL) last year, fell so badly that this was the last race of his life. In the end the race was annulled. The lone success was Daquan’s fourth place finish in the Premio Siepi Dei 4 anni. Two of our three-year-old hopefuls ran last weekend in the Czech Republic. At the Most racetrack on Saturday De Dur (POL) finished sixth in the Dr. Frankenberger Memorial and on Sunday in Chuhle Seven Rings (CZE) finished fourth in the Sklo Bohemia Trophy.
Yesterday at two in the morning the last of our mares at Etzean, Sweet Answer (GB), gave birth. Her second offspring is a colt sired by Dashing Blade (GB).
