The bay horse is the half-sister of the successful hurdler Makedos. Purchased as a five-year-old in Germany in the spring of 2007, Makalde had already experienced a demanding flat racing career with good results and an assessment of 74 kg in the German handicap. She did not finish her steeplechase debut, but won her next start. Minor health problems slowed her further progress.
